August
Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. This alliance was to become the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years.
Here in Sugarcreek, Ohio, you can follow the history of the first Swiss Settlers to come to the United States by stopping at the Alpine Hills Museum on Main St. in order to discover how they found their way to what is now known widely as Ohio’s Amish Country.
Don’t miss the Sugarcreek Business Association’s Auction on
August 13 at Fire Station Pavilion, located at 110 N. Broadway St.
The auction features a dinner starting at 4:30 served by the Garaway Lions, including hot Trail&Swiss sandwiches and Sugar Valley weiners. Silent auction will run from 5:15 to 7:30 and the grand auction running from 6 to 8.
Bargains can be found here as many of the SBA’s 150 members come together to donate for a good cause. As a non-for-profit organization, the SBA puts its proceeds back into putting on programming for visitors and the community, like the Fabulous 50s Fling and bringing Santa Claus to town for breakfast with the young ones. Stop in to see what you can find.
BEAT the heat and enjoy your August.
