October is going by fast and despite the rain, a good day on Saturday Oct. 2 gave those who looked forward to the Ohio Swiss Festival a chance to get out and see what this year had to offer. Thanks goes out to all the entertainers, visitors, village employees and planners who continue to work to make the festival a success year after year.

Meanwhile, we have a number of important dates and items going on yet this month and I want to make a note of them here:

Flushing of Fire Hydrants October 25 to October 29 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Residents should run their water until it become clear, as hydrant flushing sometimes affects residential water.

Leaf Pickup beings Monday October 19 at 7 a.m. Residents are encouraged to have their leaves and debris by the curb at that time. It will continue every Monday until our street superintendent, Matt Miller, deems that it is no longer necessary and all of the leaves are down.

October 24 is the Fire Department’s Soup & Salad Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fire station. Get out and support a good cause. They do a lot for our community.

Halloween will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 with community Halloween held at Miller Ave. at 3 p.m.

I hope all of you have a safe and happy Halloween. If you have any questions, contact us at village hall or send me an e-mail.

I invite everyone to join us in celebrating the 57th year of the Ohio Swiss Festival right here in the wonderful village of Sugarcreek. This is the biggest weekend of the year for our village and this year’s festival has added some new twists.

Beginning on Thursday evening October 1st, there will be a local talent showcase sponsored by Humming Bird Studio. This showcase follows the popular cheese eating contest and cheese auction, which begins around 6 p.m. at the Pavilion Stage, located behind the fire station on N. Broadway.

Also, we have hired many wonderful bands to fill the weekend with entertainment. One new band that will shake things up this year is called the Angel’s. They specialize in 50’s 60’s and 70’s classical rock-n-roll music. A full schedule can be viewed at www.villageofsugarcreek.com/ohioswissfest.

I look forward to seeing you all there this weekend and encourage you to stop at one of our local businesses that is here year round in addition to reveling in all things Swiss at the festival.

Festival President Nancy Harrison has done a wonderful job this year of getting things in place along with the rest of the festival board. If you see any of them, please thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to making the Swiss Festival great year after year.

Have a great festival!

We’ve found over the years that communication can sometimes be lacking and wanted to take this opportunity to use the Internet to extend and improve our communication with our constituents. On this page you will find a weekly update on what the mayor or village administrator is working on this week.

You may find out that the reason W. Main St. was shut down was because of a water main break from Third St. all the way up past Church St. Or you may find out that the people standing with the Mayor in one part or another of town were actually there to make sure that grant monies were being used properly and that the village is not being sued.

Either way, it’s a way to keep you informed.
