Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. This alliance was to become the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years.

Here in Sugarcreek, Ohio, you can follow the history of the first Swiss Settlers to come to the United States by stopping at the Alpine Hills Museum on Main St. in order to discover how they found their way to what is now known widely as Ohio’s Amish Country.

Don’t miss the Sugarcreek Business Association’s Auction on
August 13 at Fire Station Pavilion, located at 110 N. Broadway St.

The auction features a dinner starting at 4:30 served by the Garaway Lions, including hot Trail&Swiss sandwiches and Sugar Valley weiners. Silent auction will run from 5:15 to 7:30 and the grand auction running from 6 to 8.

Bargains can be found here as many of the SBA’s 150 members come together to donate for a good cause. As a non-for-profit organization, the SBA puts its proceeds back into putting on programming for visitors and the community, like the Fabulous 50s Fling and bringing Santa Claus to town for breakfast with the young ones. Stop in to see what you can find.

BEAT the heat and enjoy your August.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our resident sons and daughters serving overseas in our Armed Forces. They know all too well the value and the sacrifice that we have paid for our Freedom, and so do our Veterans. Be sure to thank them.

July holds much for our community. Be sure to check out the calander to see what is coming up, or you might miss a magical night of music or a very BIG anniversary for one of our long-time businesses.

Make July a good one.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the residents effected by the recent events that have swept through the Tuscarawas Valley, especially our Sugarcreek residents who have had to brave torrential downpours of more than 4-inches in an hour and have found out that water in their basement may not be covered if they did not have flood insurance.

We have not heard news of anyone being injured from the tornado that came through on Saturday (June 5th), and for that we are thankful. However, our thoughts are with the residents and business owners who have suffered damage to their buildings, or have lost a barn or two.

The Village’s Water & Sewer Plant has continued operations, but suffered some damage too its roof from the tornado. The village is working to ensure that its services continue as normal so its residents can try to get back to normal.

Some residents have taken the step of contacting Tuscarawas County Emergency Management Office to see about relief from the weather from FEMA. Patty Levengood is the director of the Tuscarawas County EMA and can be e-mailed at LevengoodP@co.tuscarawas.oh.us . Her department can be contacted (330)308-6670 There has been no promise of help or relief to our knowledge of this writing.

Please contact Village Hall at (330)852-4112 if we can be of service. We hope that June holds better weather and a brighter tomorrow ahead.

Our residents will continue too be in our thoughts.

The Celebrate Sugarcreek event is a great way to honor those who continue to give back to the Sugarcreek Community by honoring them for their efforts, which reflect the same values and commitment that the awards namesake gave to Sugarcreek when it was in its infancy. The event is to be held at Sweet Basil on E. Main St. at 5:15 p.m. on April 24th.

You’ll also notice some street cleaning, maintenance and much much more happening around the village. Contact Village Hall if you have questions about potholes or village services. For information on events that may interest prospective visitors, look at the events calendar on our Visit Sugarcreek pages.

In Sugarcreek, we like to think of March as the beginning of Spring. It means the the flowers will be blooming eventually, farmers will be getting ready to plow and sow their fields and the snow will find its way out of town.

That generally opens up the town for tourist season as well as community clean up and other initiatives to maintain and improve our village infrastructure. Take care out there.

Here are some Facts about March from Wikipedia:

March About this sound (pronunciation) (help·info) is the third month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, and one of the seven months which are 31 days long.

March in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of September in the Northern Hemisphere.

The name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. In Rome, where the climate is Mediterranean, March is the first month of spring, a logical point for the beginning of the year as well as the start of the military campaign season. January became the first month of the calendar year either under King Numa Pompilius (circa 713 BCE) or under the Decemvirs about 450 BCE (Roman writers differ). The numbered year began on March 1 in Russia until the end of the fifteenth century. Great Britain and her colonies continued to use March 25 until 1752, which was when they ultimately adopted the Gregorian calendar. Many other cultures and religions still celebrate the beginning of the New Year in March.

In Finnish, the month is called maaliskuu, which originates from maallinen kuu, meaning earthy month, because during maaliskuu, earth finally became visible under the snow. In Ukrainian, the month is called березень, meaning birch tree. Historical names for March include the Saxon Lentmonat, named after the equinox and gradual lengthening of days, and the eventual namesake of Lent. Saxons also called March Rhed-monat or Hreth-monath (deriving from their goddess Rhedam/Hreth), and Angles called it Hyld-monath.
